Job Description

Manufacturer of rapid, battery stored electric vehicle charging solutions.

We are branching out into home energy management. Here we will install a battery into the home where it will take a small feed from local sources (such as solar panels, ground source heat pumps, and the grid) and can be used for peak shaving, heating, hot water, charging the EV, etc. This saves the local grid from strain and saves the homeowner money.

The Role

All the development is greenfield, and we do not have any legacy code to worry about. Tasks have been broken up into milestones so you can see a rough order of development over the next few months / years.

Milestone 1

1.Build a home energy management system.

2.Each house will need to have a dedicated hardware controller and software to manage local devices without the need for cloud connections.

3.Create a local database to record local energy usage and sensor data which can then be analysed in the cloud to form the basis of future smart activity.

4.We require the ability to have software in a home to be remotely updated.

5.Create reports from this data.

6.Create software to enable excess energy from solar panels (PV) to be deposited in the battery store. Should the battery store be full, it will be either deposited into the EV or be sold to the grid.

Milestone 2

1.Alexa, Google and Siri home automation integration.

2.Mobile apps to control the home via internet.

3.Community aggregate reporting.

Milestone 3

1.To control the home energy store depending on the following:

a.Time of Use (TOU) tariff general predetermined rates.

b.In response to weather forecast

c.In response to external signals

d.In response to predicted usage

e.In response to annual patterns

2.Control energy import restrictions. This will enable the home to go off-grid.

Milestone 4

1.Group of homes to form a virtual power plant where they all share energy amongst themselves.

2.Energy trading between homes.

3.Allow a smart neighbourhood to run off-grid.

Location: Home-based but you must be prepared to travel to ZAPINAMO HQ (Coventry) at least once a month for team meetings and integrating your software with the hardware.

During your interview, we would very much like to see a small piece of code you are proud of and can talk about with us.
