Andy Haldane, Chief Economist at the Bank of England, expects Britain’s economy to recover “at a rate of knots”, from the beginning of the second quarter this year. The recovery in the economy will appear to be pretty dramatic. Last year’s figures will be so easy to beat.
Despite the setback to the start of the year, growth of 5% for the year as a whole, seems the likely outturn. The unemployment rate is expected to peak at around 6.5% in the second quarter. The extension of the furlough scheme into the second quarter is set to mitigate the increase in job losses.
At the start of the month, the headline in the Saturday Economist was “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times and that was just week one".
There have been sector winners and sector losers in the “Tale of Two Economies”. So what really are the prospects for the year ahead?
