NMC Revalidation.....Will Your Nursing Candidates Pass And On Time?

If nurses fail to achieve the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) new Revalidation standards, they will be unable to re-register, making it illegal for them to continuing practising in the UK.

As of the 1st April 2016 the new Revalidation process, brought in to replace the Post-Registration Education and Practice (PREP) system, will require nurses to compile a range of evidence every three years to demonstrate their practice is up to date and reaches the strict standards required.

Nurses will be responsible for producing a portfolio, evidencing and proving that they have fulfilled the 8 stages required to pass Revalidation. This comprehensive process includes having to evidence 450 hours of practice,  (900 if registered as a nurse and midwife), receive and link five pieces of practice-related feedback, five written reflective accounts, a reflective discussion, and at least 35 hours of continuing professional development,  20 participatory, to the relevant NMC Code.

Following a report published by Queen’s Nursing Institute, leaders from the nursing and medical profession urged employers to support nurses through this new process or risk losing them.

Monica Fletcher, chief executive of the charity Education for Health, said “One of the issues around retaining people is that we have to get a grasp of revalidation and help people through the process.

Howard Catton, the Royal College of Nursing’s Head of Policy, commented  that the regulatory has stated it will target more isolated registrants for its audit, as their practice is considered more at risk of not being up to date and stressed it is therefore imperative that these individuals are supported  through the revalidation process.

Revalidation Safe Ltd recently obtained figures from the NMC revealing 18,487 nurses were late re-registering with the NMC in 2015 alone. At this stage the NMC only required the individual to ‘tick a box’ acknowledging they had fulfilled the PREP requirements. The question therefore now is how many will be late with the more complex, time consuming, 8 stage Revalidation process?

The Nursing Times recently reported some nurses have decided ‘enough is enough’, their time is far too precious to ‘waste’ on their day off completing forms and reflecting on practice, let alone attending study days or undertaking online learning. Some see it as another hoop to jump through and have decided on early retirement.
